PsxCad simulates electrolyser Hygenesys: 'Happy to contribute to unique project'

With simulation program PsxCad, Powerspex is contributing to the Hygenesys project in Twente. On behalf of Powerspex, Luc Drummen is immersing himself in the simulation of the existing electrolyser in order to gather valuable information for the new decentralized electrolysis system to be built.

The HYGENESYS project ( HYdrogen GENEration SYStem for decentralized applications) is a learning and innovation project involving researchers, students and companies around hydrogen innovation center Twente H2Hub.
It is a collaboration between Twente knowledge institutions and companies working on the design and construction of a hydrogen electrolyzer. A 2-year project that contributes to the energy transition in terms of hydrogen.

Playing a role in this project is PsxCad, Powerspex's own simulation program. Especially for the project, Maarten Rinket, simulation engineering manager at Powerspex, has contracted Luc Drummen. The 23-year-old mechanical engineering student at UT in Enschede works on Hygenesys two days a week through Powerspex.
"My interest lies in hydrogen and this way I am already working in my future field," Drummen explains his choice for Powerspex. "A great job to combine with my studies; flexible work and totally my interest."

'That is the way to work on the future. Nice that we as Powerspex can contribute to this'

Relevant contribution PsxCad

At the H2Hub Twente site in Almelo, there is already an electrolyser for which there is much interest. "This electrolyser contains valuable information for the version that the students of the H2Hub design and build. That information is exposed through simulation in PsxCad. It identifies technical problems - perhaps even hazards. My goal is to make a relevant contribution to the project so that I can provide valuable guidance. With this we can improve the design these students are working on, or maybe even make an innovative contribution to it."

It is expected that even more use will be made of the simulation, as it provides a means to give external stakeholders and other interested parties additional explanations about the electrolyser.

'Our knowledge region can make substantial contribution to energy transition'

Substantial contribution to energy transition

When the simulation, design and construction of the electrolyser are finally completed, a concept will be ready for possible marketing. For simulation manager Rinket an interesting thought: "Especially since it is a Twente project: our knowledge region can make a substantial contribution to the energy transition as far as hydrogen is concerned with this."

Twente project

Most of the companies and knowledge institutes cooperating in Hygenesys are anchored in Twente.
"There is a lot of knowledge sharing without competition thwarting cooperation. Indeed: they work together and learn a lot from each other. In that respect, it is a project that honors the Twente mentality. You achieve the most with cooperation. That is the way to work on the future. Nice that we as Powerspex can contribute to that."

Drummen nods in agreement. "In addition, I especially applaud the serious work being done on hydrogen. It has so much potential, but still only has a relatively small share in the energy transition; although it is rising rapidly. That we in Twente are working on the energy transition through hydrogen in such a constructive way is special."
