Invest in knowledge. Increase safety.
Invest in knowledge. Increase safety.
The loss of process knowledge among operators increases the risk of incidents and downtime. Due to operator turnover and departure, it becomes crucial to capture and transfer knowledge in a timely manner. This prevents inefficient or even unsafe situations.
Safe and efficient operations require a continuously high level of skill. Training new operators and keeping experienced personnel up to date are therefore essential. By strengthening process knowledge, collaboration, and self-confidence, we minimize downtime and increase productivity and efficiency.
Powerspex has over 15 years of experience in Operator Training Simulators and simulator training. With these courses, both new and experienced operators improve their knowledge and performance in a safe, virtual environment.
Simulation training
AEC operators
Train professional skills, prevent errors, and learn to understand processes. With Powerspex's simulation training, operators learn about the processes taking place in waste-to-energy plants and how these processes can be influenced.
Targeted training is provided year-round to operators of waste-to-energy plants in the Netherlands. This takes place at the Powerspex location in Veenendaal. The training is for both novice and experienced operators. The training is specifically tailored to waste-to-energy plants, ensuring operators are trained specifically for their own situation. In short, scenario-based simulator training.
This programme is part of an industry qualification structure:

The operators train their professional skills in a safe environment using a simulator that mimics processes in power plants. This simulator aligns with the training track for production technicians and provides insight into how processes work and can be influenced.
Upon completion of the training, participants understand the commissioning and decommissioning of the AEC and have a broader overview of the interdependencies of the processes. For experienced operators, the focus is on analyzing and resolving malfunctions and deepening their knowledge.
- Learn how to put the installation into and out of service
- View the processes in context
- Learn to work together as a team
- Recognize disruptions and prevent downtime

Protection and Recovery Process Network Training National High-Voltage Grid
Powerspex Protect & Restore network training courses provide insight into the constant balancing actions that take place both automatically and require manual intervention, carried out by national and regional grid operators in cooperation with production and supply companies (PLBs).
The training provides insight into how the energy balance within a rigid grid is maintained within the set limits. Concepts such as FCR, FRR, reactive power, and redispatch are covered from the perspective of both the high-voltage grid and the power plants.

Course participants gain practical insight into the generator operating diagram, voltage regulation, connecting lines or cables to the generator, and grid stability. Using a simulator scenario, they learn the necessary actions following a blackout and the reconstruction of the high-voltage grid in a safe, virtual, and practical manner.
During these training courses, participants will deal with:
- Frequency support via FCR and FRR
- Mains voltage fluctuations due to changes in power transmission
- Connecting a second unit to an island during grid construction action
- Regulating voltage on a subgrid

CRM and Operational Decision Making
In crisis situations, Crew Resource Management (CRM) forms the foundation for effective operational decision-making. CRM maximizes the deployment of all available human and material resources by emphasizing an up-to-date picture of the situation, clear communication, and leadership. This prevents tunnel vision and human error under extreme pressure.
CRM originated in aviation but is now also applied in healthcare, the fire service, and other key sectors such as energy and infrastructure. The key focus areas are:
- Situational Awareness: continuously building and sharing the current picture of the crisis situation
- Decision-making: weighing risks and the impact on the situation
- Assertiveness and Communication: addressing concerns or doubts by each team member, regardless of his or her position

The Powerspex CRM and Operational Decision-Making training is fully focused on acting, communicating, and making decisions during a crisis situation, whether at a power plant or within the energy network. This could involve a malfunction or outage at the local level, but also when action is required in the event of problems with national and regional energy supplies.
The functioning of the team is paramount here! Using simulator scenarios, they learn to handle situational awareness, decision-making, communication, and the associated actions in a safe, virtual, and practical manner following, for example, a blackout and the reconstruction of the high-voltage grid or a calamity at a power plant.
Participants gain insight into and are trained in:
- Verifying assumptions
- Making decisions based on facts and mapping out possible options
- Weighing risks and assessing the impact of a decision
- Communicating clearly and making a well-considered decision
