Secondary installation 150kV – Velsen & IJmond

As part of a large-scale renovation program, Qirion, commissioned by Vattenfall, replaced the 150kV circuit breakers at the IJmond01 and Velsen 24 power plants.

The modernization encompassed 13 substations in the region, with an emphasis on reliable replacement without operational interruption.

A key challenge was identifying and correctly interpreting the existing system interfaces to achieve a seamless integration.

During the engineering phase, Powerspex collaborated intensively with both Qirion and Vattenfall. The work included designing secondary control and protection systems, manufacturing control panels with synchronization equipment, protection systems, and communication interfaces, plus on-site installation, integration, and extensive testing. Conversion periods of three weeks were scheduled for both locations.

The secondary installations of both 150kV substations have been successfully and controllably modernized. Following completion, the existing documentation was processed and up-to-date as-built documentation was prepared, providing Vattenfall with full insight for future maintenance and expansion.
