Situation at the client

A new bioenergy plant was constructed at the Kleefse Waard Industrial Park (IPKW) in Arnhem for the sustainable generation of heat, electricity, and steam. The installation supplies heat to two existing district heating networks and provides various companies on the site with steam at multiple pressure and temperature levels.

Desired situation

The plant had to be capable of operating fully automatically and unmanned. High availability, safe operation, and seamless integration with the existing process automation were essential in achieving this. In the event of failures in redundant components, the system had to switch independently to a backup installation without operator intervention.

Challenge

The existing PCS 7 environment had to be expanded and partly renewed while the energy supply to the companies connected to the industrial park remained available — including automatic failover during faults, without operator intervention.

Powerspex's approach

Powerspex realized the complete automation of the bioenergy plant and ensured reliable integration with the existing process infrastructure. The work included, among other things: engineering and programming of the Siemens PCS 7 control system; expansion of the existing PCS 7 system with a new AS 410 Automation Station; migration from PCS 7 version 8.0 to 9.0; automation of the wood transport system; control of the biomass boiler including Boiler Safety System (BSS); automation of the ash transport system; control of the soot blowers; automation of the water and steam system; integration and communication with external systems, including the steam turbine, SNCR installation, Bag Filter, and backup boiler; implementation of redundant controls and automatic failover for maximum operational reliability.

Result

Thanks to the automation solution from Powerspex, Veolia has a fully integrated and future-proof bioenergy plant that can operate safely and largely unmanned. Through smart integration with the existing Siemens PCS 7 environment, automatic redundancy, and extensive communication with all process plants, high availability of the energy supply has been achieved at Industriepark Kleefse Waard. As a result, heat, electricity, and steam can be reliably supplied to connected customers, while the plant is optimally prepared for long-term and efficient operation.
